What can you use the app for?

The name Ujam is very fitting because the application does just that. It gives the average user a better way to make, edit and share their own music. The best part is that the user does not have to be a professional (or even a skilled) musician to do it. The way the site works is providing some instructions that allow the user to start with a tune. This is the composition stage that gives them the base for their finished piece. Next, the user can edit the style of their music. There are many to choose from and each allows the user to produce something that sounds exactly the way they want it to. After polishing their personal music creation, the user can share it with others. It can be sent privately to a select group of friends or family members or shared with a larger group of fans. Users can eve build their own sound tracks for videos and trailers, vlogs, or generate a ring tone using their song.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Ujam was founded in April of 2010 by Pharrell Williams, Peter Gorges and famous German composer and music producer Hans Zimmer. Zimmer is well known for his music work with hit films including Gladiator, Crimson Tide, the Lion King, Pirates of the Caribbean and the Dark Knight. Ujam was created to help empower anyone with an interest in making their own music, from the beginner to the seasoned performer.

What are the differences to other apps?

Just about everything Ujam can do is unique. The application guides musicians of all levels to building their own music. Style settings allow users to produce a piece they can be proud of and would want to listen to. After refining the piece, the user can share it with others or even transform it into a ring tone. Ujam gives beginner musicians a rare opportunity to gain fans and provides an easy way for skilled musicians to show off their talent.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

The Ujam website utilizes a bold yellow and black color scheme that works very well. Sleek, modern buttons and other site elements invite new musicians to try their hand at a new song. The actual style and production tools are very well organized. Users can listen to their song and follow along with volume bars and more. The design behind Ujam helps simplify the process of producing unique music.

How does the registration process work?

Visitors can register for a Ujam account by clicking on the large, black “Sign Up” button along the right hand side of the homepage. The tidy registration form requires a first and last name, username, email address and password. The user must manually check the terms of service and privacy policy agreement check boxes found at the bottom of the form. Two additional check boxes at the very bottom are automatically checked to sign the user up for email alerts and to have their information shared with third party companies. The user must uncheck these to opt out. After submitting the information, the user is advised that they must check their email inbox for an activation link to complete registration.

What does it cost to use the application?

Ujam does not currently have any premium paid membership listed on the site. Anyone can create an account for free. There are no subscription fees or other charges for doing so. The new account allows the user to produce up to ten songs, although no information is given on whether that quantity can be expanded with a payment. The site also mentions downloading songs as ring tones, which it is safe to assume, would cost something.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Anyone who loves music and wants to try to make it can really get into Ujam. The site is very easy to use. It is also a great resource for anyone who needs to add a soundtrack to a video on a very limited budget.
